The Many Faces of Southeast Asia, a fundraiser for Southeast Asian Ministry (SeAM), was held Sat., April 24, 4–6 p.m., at Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, 285 N. Dale St. in St. Paul.
What an event! Over 125 people attended, and we made some strides toward achieving our goal of $5,000 in order to get all the matching funds from Thrivent. In case you weren't able to come but you want to support SeAM, you can still donate and have the matching funds apply. Call 651-293-1261 for more details.
The format of the event, a bold departure from previous fundraisers, was more like a fair. Children spent time in the activity room run by Cadi Kivimagi while their parents and grandparents strolled around the room to view displays about SeAM's programs and the refugee communities we serve. Guests could get their blood pressure checked at the Parish Nurse table, have their picture taken in the Elder Program Bus, and read essays written by ESL students.
Members of Mount Calvary Lutheran Church and the Karen Elder Program showed up in full force; there were 24 Mount Calvary folks there, and over 20 Karen Elders! The Elders started off our entertainment for the evening with their beautiful singing.
With Dao Lor as the masterful emcee, the evening's program went smoothly to the enjoyment of all. After the Karen Elders had finished, the Cambodian Music School played. The closing performance, a Tai Chi demonstration by Russell Smiley, had the guests on their feet as we learned a few basic moves.
In between the performances, guests visited the displays and got the chance to ask more in-depth questions of SeAM board members, staff, and volunteers. Dick Sarafolean regaled the crowd with his year-long stash of jokes while he and Anne Hesselroth drew for door prizes.
Staff member Ta Mla Say took pictures and video footage like a pro, so check back in a few days to see some glimpses of the event.
