As it says in our mission statement, SeAM makes an effort to educate the public about its own work, immigration issues, and health issues among refugees in St. Paul. We do this both by making presentations in the broader St. Paul area and by bringing in experts to speak to our programs or give workshops at SeAM. So far in 2010, SeAM has spoken at three Adult Forums and other church gatherings. We also invited the Center for Victims of Torture to come to SeAM and lead a workshop with leaders of nearby services and nonprofits who work with refugees. They discussed the symptoms of trauma, resources for dealing with it, and the ways in which communities can help heal those who have experienced trauma or torture. In addition to educating the community around us, SeAM is also reaching out to newly elected officials as a part of Minnesota Asian/American Health Coalition. In the next few months we will be educating them about how important small, community-based organizations are to effectively eliminating health disparities in our state. SeAM staff and volunteers are always happy to make presentations or lead discussion in church groups, books clubs, and other organizations. We can also bring some Pan Dau to display and sell. Presentations can be tailored to meet a group's interests, and they usually include a history of SeAM, an update of what it's doing now in our community, and a description of our programs.
Is there something you'd like to learn more about or discuss with other members of your community? Do you have expertise that you would like to share in a presentation? Please let us know at 651-293-1261 or seam-stpaul@hotmail.com. |
